Surgery: Before and After Care
Prior to surgery
Your pet should not eat after midnight the evening before his/her surgical procedure.
Your pet should not drink after 6am the day of the procedure.
Administration of medications should be discussed on a case-by-case basis with Dr. Perl.
Post surgery
Your pet should be confined to a space in your home that is comfortable and safe for him/her. Jumping from counters and refrigerators is not advised for cats. Running up and downstairs and playing with other animals is not recommended for dogs.
If your pet is “nursing” the wound be watchful that he/she does not remove the stitches/staples. An Elizabethan collar may be necessary to prevent this and can be purchased at your local pet store.
Check daily for any signs of redness, tenderness or puss around incision site.
Report any inconsistencies to Dr. Perl immediately.
Your pet may drink and eat when they arrive at home.
Pain medication should be administered as prescribed by Dr. Perl.
